Tutorial-1       Becoming a Smooth Operator: Achieving End-to-end Automated

Elizabeth Adams (TM Forum, UK)

Abstract

This three-part tutorial lays out why well-integrated, automated service management is so critical, and brings the audience up to date on industry advances in this important area. Part 1 covers the basics, including the impact of good service management processes and systems in retaining customers and the state in which most service providers and network operators find themselves today. Part 2 is a comprehensive overview of activities within the TeleManagement Forum to help break through the many roadblocks to efficient service management operation. Specifics are provided about the Telecom Operations Map and the Technology Integration Map, as well as current Catalyst Projects designed to kick-start the plug-and-play OSS market in this industry. Finally, part 3 pulls everything together, providing a common-sense 12-step method of achieving service management automation.

Recommended audience: Engineer, manager and operator who need to understand the business motivations behind end-to-end service management and state-of-the-art technologies.

Level: Intermediate.

Tutorial-2      IP Impact on the Evolution of Telecom Networks

Dr. Salah Aidarous (NEC America, USA)

Abstract

With the current trends in data traffic, IP has become one of the major objectives in both computing and telecom industries. Service providers are faced with difficult choices in network modernization and evolution in order to maintain their competitiveness and market share. While there is a lot of activities in the R&D community, some of the critical issues that are needed for the smooth transition are not addressed. The tutorial examines the technology triggers and the challenges facing service providers in evolving their current network infrastructure and maintain their competitiveness. It discusses the major differences between the IP and PSTN worlds, how to address them, and potential opportunities to exploit existing technology to enable integration between them. The role of R&D community will be emphasized.

Recommended Audience: Telecom planners, R&D staff

Level: Basic (or introductory)

Tutorial-3      Policy-Based Management for Enterprise and Carrier IP Management -

SNMP, COPS, LDAP, DEN and Beyond

Takeo Hamada (Fujitsu America, USA)

Abstract

Policy-Based Management (PBM) or Policy-Based Networking (PBN) has become one of the most important IP management and control techniques in the past years. Though the current PBM vendors focuses primarily on enterprise IP management products, widespread and rising importance of IP in public network is likely to bring PBM as the for most management technique in public network management. In this tutorial, starting with basics of PBM and its historical development, we cover current standards such as COPS, LDAP, DEN, and followed by standards activities at IETF, DMTF. The impact of PBM on existing management methodologies such as SNMP, WBM, TMN, is examined, with studies on pros and cons of these methodologies, and their relationship to PBM. The existing PBM products are then surveyed, to give the current state of the art and the direction of vendors. One important aspect of PBM is control. In particular, PBN represents the control aspect of PBM, providing a uniform substrate for IP control and management. We will study and analyze PBN applications, taking an example from end-to-end QoS provisioning in IP network. In the last part of the tutorial, we shall focus on the limitations of current PBM standards and its architecture, and shall discuss requirements of PBM for carrier-level IP management, and prospective future PBM architecture.

Recommended Audience: Network manager, PBM system designer, system developers

Level: Intermediate. Basics on IP mgmt will be helpful, but no prior knowledge on PBM is assumed.

Tutorial-4      Mobile Network Management ? IMT 2000 Management

Dr. Jong-Tae Park (Kyungpook Univ., Korea)

Abstract

Mobile communication service and networks are rapidly growing throughout the world. IMT-2000/UMTS provides mobile multimedia and global roaming services, and the efficient management of these gobal networks and services is not an easy task. In this tutorial, we introduce the management technologies of various mobile communication networks such as GSM and PCS, and IMT-2000. IMT-2000 provides mobile multimedia, global roaming and high-speed data services and adopts family concept and virtual home environment, allowing service portability. IMT-2000 management must take into account these IMT-2000 service features. Several standardization bodies and research groups such as ITU-T SG4, TIA TR45.7, T1M1.5, ETSI SMG5, TTA/ARIB, TM Forum and 3GPP TSG-SA/WG5 are studying IMT-2000 management. These standard bodies¡¯ activities and current contributions are also presented. We also introduce the methodology of how to apply TMN concept for the management of IMT-2000. Specifically, the requirements and methodology of network and service management in TMN framework are presented with detailed description on global service. Finally, the ways of utilizing new technologies such as JAVA, CORBA and UML for the management of the next generation mobile networks are introduced.

Tutorial-5       Integrated Telecommunications Management Solutions

Dr. Graham Chen (CiTR, Australia)

Abstract

Today¡¯s telecommunication industry is facing the challenge of multiple technologies (both in network technology and computer software technology) emerging much faster than the speed of solution development. As such, the management solutions become more complex and difficult to control.

It is evident that the industry is looking for strategies and experiences which will help the development of management solutions in this multiple technology environment. However, there is a lack of references which report on successful software development and implementation of these solutions. It is for this purpose this tutorial is prepared. It aims to share with the audience the experiences in developing solutions which encompass multiple technologies, and are designed to have a much longer lifecycle than most of the software technologies.

The tutorial covers the following major topic areas:

- Management of the software development lifecycle in a multiple technology environment

- The paradigm shift from building small centralized system to building large distributed systems

- The strategies and experiences of management technology integration

Recommended Audience: Technical managers, software architects, senior software engineers

Level: Intermediate to advance

Tutorial-6       IP Network/Service Management (IP VPN technology)

How, Eric Choon Soon (Lucent Technology, USA)

Abstract

In today's new data core network, IP VPN has been discussed one of the new services as the alternative of existing quality data services like leased line service. However, given the existing network and its technologies, It is essential that advanced and integrated OSSs to manage the end to end network should be taken place, in order to secure QoS and provide this kind of quality services. In this tutorial will discuss future business and technical needs in OSSs and required functionality and its solutions for such new service like IP VPN.

Recommended Audience: Network managers, business/ service managers, system developers
